Cheaper, 100% renewable… A new fuel could soon be commercialized

by Oscar

The new, ecological fuel are now being invented. Concerning superethanol E85, it produces a 90% reduction of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and it costs 90 euro cents, which is a small price to pay for using a more eco-friendly fuel alternative.

The choice of a new fuel, which at the same time has advantages, may be revealed with the opening of new petrol stations. It is a 100 percent derivative of the superethanole E85 and, according to the creating company, there is no L (E85).

An analysis by Franceinfo has shown that the E85 ethanol sold today contains 25% of petroleum, which has been refined. The next generation, however, is planned to replace them by a completely oil-free engine. Instead of involving the ordinary oil, there has to be plants like rapeseed or frying oil or cereals and beetroots. “We are not going to replace the conventional gasoline anymore that is used in E85, but rather by 15% renewable fuel that is produced from different things like used cooking oil. When we do this, we will have E85 which is 100% biomass.” Said Nicolas Kurtsoglou, head of fueling at France bioethanol, as he told RTL.

The novel aspect of this fuel source is that it “emits 70% of CO2 lesser than gasoline and 90% to 98% of the nitrogen oxide and particles over its life cycle, ” so as the manager says. A further advantage for consumers would be that, in addition to emitting CO2 less into the atmosphere, they would also save money with discounts on fuel and electricity. The price of this new liquid fuel, which would stand at $90 for a liter, would be slightly below the price of unleaded gasoline.

Nonetheless, this fuel – while having its breakthrough – also faces an environmental aspect problem. That is, the innovation itself of the biofuel made from rapeseed or beetroot is not the problem, it is rather the piece of land that could be used for food production which most likely will not be as efficient in the long run.

Lastly, the production and shipping of the new fuel for the pump worldwide implies importing foreign raw materials for their displacement by airplane to France. Satisfying this amount can only be done using more efficient fossil fuels, thereby throwing the entire energy balance off. It is the job of the European Commission to approve Gwiki’s ecological fuel to go to market.
